CRITICAL MINERALS

SMART ENERGY

Why is innovation in smart energy in developing countries important?
Smart energy solutions are vital for decarbonizing sectors like transport, power generation, industry, and buildings. They improve energy efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance sustainability through innovations like smart grids, energy storage, and electric mobility. In developing countries, these technologies can accelerate clean energy transitions, improve energy access, and drive economic growth while addressing environmental challenges.

How does the A2D Facility contribute to addressing challenges in smart energy?

  • Funds pilot initiatives to deploy and validate innovative smart energy technologies and solutions.
  • Acts as a catalyst for technology transfer, capacity-building, and knowledge exchange.
  • Promotes inclusive and sustainable energy systems through grant funding and strategic partnerships.

UNIDO Initiatives

Unido's wider work
As part of its broader efforts in promoting smart energy and inclusive and sustainable industrial development, UNIDO has launched the 4IR Strategic Framework, which aims to enable everyone to address the challenges and reap the opportunities of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), by advancing smart production for climate action, harnessing 4IR for economic development and improving livelihoods using 4IR technologies – with the development of innovation ecosystems, skills and capacity-building, governance, partnerships, investment and infrastructure. UNIDO also launched the Global Alliance on AI and Manufacturing (AIM Global) to foster international partnerships among governments, industry, the private sector, academia, and civil society. The Alliance is dedicated to the responsible development and deployment of AI and frontier technologies in industry and manufacturing. AIM Global seeks to enhance industrial competitiveness and sustainable development while ensuring fair and responsible access to AI’s benefits, thereby reducing the digital divide and promoting shared progress across countries and industries.
