CRITICAL MINERALS

INDUSTRIAL DECARBONIZATION

Why is innovation in industrial decarbonization in developing countries important?
Industrial decarbonization is crucial as the industrial sector, particularly heavy industries like steel, cement, and chemicals, significantly contributes to global carbon dioxide emissions. Achieving net-zero emissions requires using low-carbon energy, cleaner production technologies, improved energy efficiency, and advanced solutions such as carbon capture, usage, and storage (CCUS), especially in rapidly urbanizing and growing developing countries.

How does the A2D Facility contribute to addressing these challenges?

  • Accelerates industrial decarbonization in developing countries through targeted grant support and knowledge dissemination.
  • Funds transformative pilot projects deploying innovative technologies.
  • Supports capacity-building initiatives, policy advocacy, and strategic partnerships for sustainable industrial development.
  • Collaborates with stakeholders to advance clean energy transitions, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and promote inclusive economic growth.

UNIDO Initiatives

Unido's wider work
UNIDO plays a pivotal role in driving global efforts towards industrial deep decarbonization through the Clean Energy Ministerial Industrial Deep Decarbonization Initiative (IDDI). This initiative, coordinated by UNIDO and co-led by the UK and India, comprises a coalition of public and private organizations aimed at stimulating demand for low-carbon industrial materials. Working closely with national governments, IDDI standardizes carbon assessments, establishes ambitious procurement targets, incentivizes investment in low-carbon product development, and formulates industry guidelines. Members of this coalition collaborate closely with related initiatives such as the Mission Possible Platform, the Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT), and the World Economic Forum. Together, they focus on mitigating carbon-intensive construction materials like steel, cement, and concrete, aligning efforts towards sustainable industrial transformation.
